Metropolitan Jonathan to appeal his sentence in the Supreme Court of Ukraine

The hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Jonathan (Yeleckykh) of Tulchyn and Bratslav, who was sentenced to 5 years in prison and exchanged by the Ukrainian authorities to Russia as a prisoner of war, decided to appeal the decision of the Vinnytsia City Court. The bishop does not agree with the previous sentence and, through a lawyer, filed a cassation appeal with the Supreme Court of Ukraine. This is reported by the publication Glavkom.

“Metropolitan Jonathan, through his lawyer, filed a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court against the sentence, according to which he received five years in prison. This is reported by Glavkom with reference to the court register. Currently, the Supreme Court is requesting from the Vinnytsia City Court the materials of the criminal proceedings against the convicted Metropolitan,” — the publication said.

Earlier, Metropolitan Jonathan (Yeleckykh) of Tulchyn and Bratslav spoke about the charges brought against him by the courts in Ukraine and why he was actually sentenced to prison. The bishop said that among the charges, he was even charged with a church-analytical publication that he wrote in 2022.
