Most churches damaged by war in Ukraine belong to UOC - media

Most of the damaged and destroyed religious buildings in Ukraine as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war belong to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The total number of such buildings belonging to different denominations has exceeded 600. This is reported by the Workshop of Academic Religious Studies.

According to the published data, more than half of the list of affected religious buildings are churches of the UOC – 317 churches. Other affected religious buildings include churches of the OCU – 56, UGCC and RCC – 20, Protestant houses of worship – 168, Muslim mosques – 8, Jewish synagogues – 16, as well as 10 religious buildings of other religions and 9 religious educational institutions.

As we reported earlier, as of August 31, 2024, the majority of those killed in the Russian-Ukrainian war were clergy and religious leaders who belonged to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The number of UOC clergy killed is three times higher than the same figure for the OCU, followed by representatives of the Evangelical Christians.
