“Most of all - in the UOC": public organizations counted the number of clergy killed during the war

As of August 31, 2024, the majority of those killed in the Russian-Ukrainian war were clergy and religious leaders who belonged to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The number of killed clergymen of the UOC is three times higher than the same figure for the OCU, followed by representatives of the organization of Christians of Evangelical Faith. This is reported by the website “Christians Against War”.

It is noted that as of August 31, 2024, 32 clergymen, monks and nuns, as well as clergymen of the UOC, were killed. Among the dead are 17 clergymen, 5 monks and nuns, one chaplain, and 9 clergymen of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

In turn, the number of dead representatives of other denominations is as follows:

SDA (Seventh-day Adventists) — 1;
Evangelical Christian Baptists — 6;
OCU — 10;
RCC — 1;
CIECU (Council of Independent Evangelical Churches of Ukraine) — 1;
Christians of Evangelical Faith — 14;

As a reminder, in April-May 2024, the Sociological Group Rating conducted a regional survey on a number of issues related to language and religious affiliation. According to the data obtained regarding regional centers, the majority of residents of large cities allegedly prefer the OCU in terms of religion, while 1% to 12% of respondents allegedly identified themselves with the UOC.
