OCU going to build a cathedral in Odesa

The Odesa Eparchy of the OCU announced plans to build a new cathedral in Odesa. The Holy Trinity Cathedral will be located on the site of the Central Garrison Church in Cosmonauts Park, which was destroyed in 1917. As of today, supporters of the OCU hold religious events in the former Sputnik cinema, which is located at the same place. For this purpose, the Odesa City Council transferred a 0.25-hectare plot of land to the OCU community and approved the relevant documentation. The OCU expects patrons to help them build the church. This is reported by the regional edition “Dumskaya”.

“In 2000, this building (the former Sputnik cinema – ed.) was transferred to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine for its re-equipment and construction of a church. For 25 years, there have been many court cases regarding this facility, arrests. But as of now, it is clean and land can be allocated for it. We have started this process, and once it is completed, construction will begin. They want to build a large church there that would meet the needs of the community, as the current building is very small. In addition, there are very few churches in Odesa that belong to the OCU,” – said Zhanna Mandrychenko, a member of the city council.

Earlier, we reported that the Odesa City Council has not transferred any real estate to the Odesa Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church over the past 5 years. The city council reported this in response to a request from local deputy Oleksandr Slavskyi. The letter states that there are no lease relations with regard to religious buildings that are monuments of cultural heritage of local and national importance, namely, lease relations with the Odesa Diocese of the UOC.
