Head of the Cypriot Church Calls for Struggle Against Turkish Occupation

In his Paschal message this year, Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus once again drew attention to the ongoing Turkish occupation of part of the island, which has lasted for over 50 years. He emphasized that, despite numerous sufferings and hardships, the Greek people of Cyprus do not lose their faith, as the Resurrection of Christ is a symbol of victory over death and justice over evil. The message was published on the website of Orthodoxia News Agency.

«Even if we live under the yoke of occupation, even if our lands are still under foreign control, we know that resurrection is not just a spiritual event. It is a symbol of the struggle for the restoration of truth and justice,» said the Archbishop.

He also called on the international community not to remain indifferent to the fate of Cyprus, stressing that Turkey’s aggression should not go unanswered. According to the Archbishop, the Resurrection of Christ symbolizes not only the victory over death but also the inevitable victory of justice, which the Greek people of Cyprus are eagerly awaiting.

Earlier, it was reported that on April 1, 2025, a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus took place, during which a national fundraising campaign was announced in support of the Christians of Syria. The campaign took place on the fifth Sunday of Great Lent, April 6, 2025, in all parishes of Cyprus.
