A new earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 occurs on Mount Athos

On June 7, 2025, another earthquake struck Mount Athos. This time, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.3 on the Richter scale. According to experts, the incident occurred in the area of the Dohiar Monastery. This was reported by Orthodoxia Info.

According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake is located on Mount Athos, 9 kilometers northwest of the capital of Athos — Karea. The depth of the center is estimated at 12.5 kilometers. A few minutes later, a second earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 3.8 on the Richter scale.

“It happened in the same place where we have been monitoring it for many months. We have the same microseismic sequence, and now it has produced an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3,” — said Kostas Papazakhos, professor of seismology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, noting that this time the epicenter of seismic activity was located in the area of the Dohiar Monastery.

As we reported earlier, on May 1, 2025, an earthquake struck Mount Athos again. Seismic activity was recorded in the southwest of the city of Uranopolis. The strength of the tremor amounted to 3.8 points on the Richter scale.
