Pope Leo XIV urged Trump and Putin to seek peaceful ways to resolve conflicts

On August 13, 2025, Pope Leo XIV commented on the upcoming meeting between the Presidents of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15. The pontiff emphasized the importance of seeking peaceful solutions and resolving conflicts through diplomacy rather than the use of force, according to Vatican News.

The Vatican leader drew attention to the scale of violence and the numerous human casualties accompanying modern wars, calling for efforts to focus on dialogue and negotiations. He noted that although the Vatican cannot directly stop wars, it actively promotes “soft diplomacy,” encouraging the search for non-violent ways to resolve conflicts.

Leo XIV stressed that diplomacy and constructive communication are key to ending confrontations and reducing human losses, highlighting the importance of new approaches to peaceful conflict resolution.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s Ambassador to the Vatican, Andriy Yurash, stated that the Vatican is considering a visit by Pope Leo XIV to Ukraine. According to the diplomat, the newly elected Pope has shown exceptional attention to Ukraine from the very beginning of his pontificate. On the day of his first public statement, he devoted a central part of his speech specifically to the issue of Ukraine.
