The media told about the number of religious communities in the controlled territories of Donetsk region

Regional mass media reported information about the number of religious communities operating in the controlled territories of Donetsk Region. According to the published information, before the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, there were 1,879 religious organizations functioning in the region, namely 1,805 religious communities, 23 religious centers, 13 monasteries, 1 Lavra, 26 missions, 1 brotherhood, 11 spiritual educational institutions. This is reported by «Vostochniy Variant» .

It is reported that as of September 2025 it is known about damages in 132 religious buildings of religious organizations. Not all can be investigated due to the activity of military operations.

At the same time, 95% of all religious organizations in the Ukrainian-controlled territory of the region are Christian denominations. In Donetsk region the most mass confession is the Orthodox — 273 religious organizations, of which: 242 religious organizations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and 31 religious organizations of the OCU.

Catholicism is represented by 27 religious organizations, namely: 21 communities — UGCC, 3 monasteries of the UGCC and 3 religious communities of the RCC. Protestantism in Donetsk region has 220 religious organizations, of which: 214 — religious communities, 3 — spiritual directorates, 2 missions and 1 spiritual educational institution. There are also 8 Muslim, 6 Jewish, 1 Buddhist, 2 religious communities of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, 2 religious communities of the World Pure Religion (Sahaja Yoga), 1 community of Presbyterians and 1 community of Mudslavs registered in the region. There are also 13 religious communities of Jehovah’s Witnesses registered on the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

We shall remind you that earlier we reported that in Sumy region the number of religious communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is the largest in the region. At the same time, the total number of religious organizations registered in the region is 649 communities.
