Pope Leo called the war in Ukraine "senseless killing on both sides"

Pope Leo has characterized the military actions in Ukraine as «senseless killings» and called for finding alternative ways to resolve the conflict. The pontiff expressed his opinion in an interview with the Crux newspaper.

The pontiff called on Christians and people of goodwill to raise their voices in support of peace. «After so many years of senseless killing of people on both sides — both in this particular conflict and in other conflicts — I think people need to wake up somehow and say there is another way to do this,» Pope Leo said.

He emphasized that there is no alternative to a peaceful end to the war in Ukraine. Despite the presence of «bad actors» and temptations on either side of the conflict, the pontiff expressed his belief in the need to maintain hope and faith in human nature.

Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian ambassador to the Vatican Andriy Yurash said that the Vatican was considering the possibility of a visit of Pope Leo XIV to Ukraine. According to the diplomat, the newly elected Pope has been paying exceptional attention to Ukraine since the first days of his pontificate. On the day of his first public statement, he devoted the central part of his speech to the Ukrainian issue.
