Cyprus Orthodox Church prepares to elect new metropolitan of Paphos amid internal crisis

The Cypriot Orthodox Church is entering a crucial stage in the process of electing a new metropolitan of Paphos, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of May. According to Greek publication Vima Orthodoxias, preparations for the election are taking place amid serious internal tensions, institutional disputes and under the watchful eye of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
According to statements by Archbishop George II of Cyprus, the Holy Synod will hold consecutive meetings on May 18, 19 and 20. The main purpose of these meetings will be to review and approve the new statutes of the Church. The completion of this procedure is a prerequisite for the official announcement of the date of the elections, which are expected to take place immediately after the ratification of the new regulations.
The situation surrounding the Paphos Metropolis is complicated by the deep crisis surrounding the case of former Metropolitan Tihikos. The Primate of the Church emphasized that the actions of the Synod are not based on personal accusations, but on ecclesiological issues. In particular, the leadership of the Church is concerned about manifestations of «Zealotism» and deviations from the canonical order, especially in relation to other Christian denominations. It is emphasized that the issue of deprivation of dignity is not on the agenda at the moment.
At the same time, the side of the former metropolitan claims about procedural violations in the decision-making by the Synod. The lawyers are considering the possibility of appealing to the Supreme Court of Cyprus to challenge or review the case. Additional tension is created by reports of incidents inside the churches, which required the intervention of the Cypriot police. According to sources, these are already under investigation and may become criminal in nature.
The upcoming elections are critical to the unity of the Church of Cyprus. The future hierarch will need not only theological competence, but also diplomatic skills to restore the confidence of the flock and overcome the consequences of the current conflict. The next weeks will be decisive for the future of ecclesiastical stability on the island.
