In France, a Catholic church has become a DJ performance venue with an altar as a stage

In the city of Vazerac, France, an unusual event called «electromesse» was held in the Catholic church of Saint-Julien in which a DJ console was installed directly on the church throne. The organizers positioned the event as a charity music evening, but the use of sacred space caused a wide public outcry.

According to information published by the Tribune Chrétienne portal, the incident took place on April 30. In the altar part of the church, intended for the Eucharist, a full performance with electronic music was organized. Attendees used the church space as a platform to dance and listen to the set.

The organizers of the event emphasized its charitable nature: admission was free and donations collected were to be sent to Secours Catholique. Despite calls for «proper behavior,» the use of the altar as a base for DJ equipment has become a matter of controversy, as the altar is a central sacred place in the Catholic tradition.

At this point, it remains unclear whether such an action was officially authorized by diocesan authorities. It should be noted that this is not the first case of unusual use of religious buildings in France — earlier in the press there were reports about plans to rebuild a church of the VII century into a brewery and restaurant.
