A suspect in the desecration of a Catholic church in Mulhouse has been arrested in France

In the French city of Mulhouse, police detained a man suspected of committing an act of vandalism at the Catholic Church of St. Stephen. The perpetrator desecrated religious artifacts by using an altar cross to break into historic confessionals dating from the early 19th century, according to Life Site News.

The incident occurred on July 5, 2026, and was captured on surveillance cameras. The footage shows the man inside the church overturning liturgical items and pouring water out of flower vases. The fact that the perpetrator used the altar cross as a tool to break into the confessionals caused particular concern among the public and the parish priest, Pascal Bulik. According to the priest, the vandal’s goal was specifically to desecrate Christian symbols, as no valuable property belonging to the congregation was stolen.

Police detained a 37-year-old suspect the day after the parish priest filed an official report. Frank Leroy, head of the Grand Est region, demanded a thorough investigation and an assessment of the suspect’s mental capacity. The pastor emphasized that this incident was an unprecedented act of aggression against the local parish, where no similar incidents had been reported in the past five years.
