Tragic incident on Mount Athos: a novice jumped out of a moving ambulance

The Holy Mount Athos has been shaken by the news of a serious accident involving a 48-year-old novice of St. Paul’s Monastery, who was seriously injured after jumping out of a moving ambulance. The incident occurred during the monk’s emergency hospitalization at a hospital in Halkidiki.

According to Greek publication Vima Orthodoxias, the victim was initially taken to the Karyes Medical Center with severe chest pains. Doctors diagnosed the need for examination in a specialized hospital outside of Mount Athos. However, during transportation towards Ouranoupolis, the novice’s condition was complicated by severe anxiety and confusion.

While the ambulance was in motion, the man suddenly opened the door and jumped onto the roadway. Despite the immediate actions of the medics, the condition of the victim is assessed as critical. He is currently at the Hippokratio Hospital in Thessaloniki, where doctors are fighting for his life: the patient is intubated, diagnosed with multiple injuries, and several cardiac arrests were recorded during resuscitation.

The monastic community of Mount Athos is deeply concerned about what has happened. In comments to the press, the Athonite Fathers note that “the monks lead a quiet prayer life” and suggest that such a condition may have been the result of extreme physical exhaustion or severe psychological pressure. As part of standard legal protocol, two ambulance personnel have been temporarily detained to determine the circumstances of the negligent injuries, while an investigation into the full details of the incident continues.
