An LGBT community rally was held in Lviv to demand the legalization of same-sex marriage

On June 7, 2026, a public event called “LvivPride” took place in downtown Lviv, with participants calling for legal recognition of same-sex unions and reform of family law. The event, which took place under police protection on the square in front of the Opera House, featured a reenactment of a wedding ceremony and sparked a counter-protest by supporters of traditional values.

According to “Suspilne.Lviv, organizers from the “Feminist Workshop” group held the event under the slogan “For True Traditions.” The highlight of the event was a reenactment of the so-called “first Galician lesbian wedding,” held right in the historic city center.

In addition to symbolic actions, the activists put forward specific political demands. These included repealing the current version of the Civil Code, official recognition of same-sex families at the state level, and tougher penalties for hate crimes. Participants chanted slogans about protecting their rights, holding signs that read “The Meaning Is in Love.”

At the same time, a counter-protest by supporters of conservative views took place nearby. Opponents of the event carried signs stating that “the traditional family is a strong state.” Those protesting against the Pride event invoked Ukraine’s constitutional foundations and spoke out in defense of the traditional family model. Despite calls from some members of parliament for the mayor to ban the event, the rally took place amid a heavy police presence.

As a reminder, the Industrial District Court of Kharkivruled to dismiss the lawsuit filed by two men seeking legal recognition of their cohabitation as a family. The court concluded that there were insufficient grounds for officially formalizing such a union under current legislation.
