A Mysterious Philanthropist Saves English Churches by Hiding Gold Treasures

An unusual charitable initiative has taken off in the United Kingdom: an anonymous benefactor is secretly leaving caches of gold coins in historic churches, helping parishes cope with critical financial difficulties. According to The Times, such donations have already enabled several communities to prevent the closure of their historic churches.

The most recent instance occurred at St. Wilfrid’s Church, located in the village of Melling (Lancashire). The parish, consisting of just five people, had planned to disband because it could not afford the major renovation of the 15th-century building, estimated to cost 750,000 pounds. The situation changed when a box containing nine “Britannia” gold coins and a note from a certain “James, servant of the Living God” was found under the altar.

The donation had a significant impact: although the coins had a face value of 900 pounds, they were sold for nearly 30,000 pounds. The proceeds provided the congregation with the necessary financial foundation to raise funds for repairs and apply for grant funding. According to the publication, the philanthropist has been carrying out similar secret initiatives since at least 2022, supporting small parishes which, according to recent studies, are at high risk of closing in the coming years.
