Work has begun in Turkey to install a protective covering over the dome of Hagia Sophia

A key phase of the large-scale restoration of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul has begun: experts have started installing a protective membrane over the main dome of the architectural monument. These measures have been taken to ensure the structural safety of the building, preserve its unique mosaics, and protect workers during the restoration process, according to Türkiye Today.

The restoration work includes replacing the dome’s lead covering, which requires reliable insulation of the building from external weather conditions. To this end, a temporary steel frame was erected, which is now being covered with a special gray fire-resistant material. The choice of color stems from a desire to preserve the visual harmony of the historic building. According to engineers, the installation was carried out with all necessary wind load calculations taken into account to minimize the impact on the cathedral’s original architectural fabric.

Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, noted that the project is being carried out under the supervision of a scientific committee. The main goal of the restoration is to strengthen the cathedral for future generations while preserving its historical and cultural character. Despite the large-scale work being carried out, Hagia Sophia remains open to visitors and operates as usual.
