The Pope called for an end to attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV issued a new statement regarding the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, calling on the parties to immediately cease hostilities and strictly observe international humanitarian law. The pontiff expressed deep concern over the rising number of civilian casualties, including children, resulting from attacks on civilian infrastructure.

According to Reuters, the head of the Roman Catholic Church drew the faithful’s attention to the tragic consequences of the armed conflict, emphasizing that people in both Ukraine and Russia are suffering from the hostilities. The Pope stressed the need for both sides of the conflict to cease attacks on civilian targets.

Previously, the pontiff also criticized the increase in military spending in European countries, calling this trend a betrayal of diplomacy and the prioritization of peaceful dialogue. The Pope’s latest statement is yet another confirmation of his position that the escalation of violence is unacceptable and that innocent civilians in the conflict zone must be protected.
