The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and the Vatican discussed "issues related to the preservation of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra"

On August 10, 2026, Andriy Sibiga, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, met with Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine. The main topics of discussion were the development of dialogue with the Vatican, humanitarian initiatives, and issues related to the preservation of Ukraine’s Christian and cultural heritage.
, during the talks , special attention was given to the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and preparations for the celebration of its 975th anniversary. The parties emphasized the importance of ensuring the preservation of this sacred site for future generations and discussed further steps to strengthen cooperation between Ukraine and the Vatican.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted the significance of the humanitarian support provided by the Vatican and expressed its intention to continue developing joint practical projects. In addition, the meeting touched on the results of recent visits by representatives of the Holy See to Ukraine, as well as events marking the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s apostolic visit to the country.
As a reminder, earlier, Maksym Ostapenko, director of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, presented the concept for the development of the holy site to the diplomatic corps, stating that in the future it should become the “Ukrainian Vatican.”
