Jordan is preparing to celebrate the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Jesus Christ

The year 2030 marks the 2,000th anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist, an event that, according to tradition, took place in Al-Mahtas, in what is now Jordan. According to Vatican News, the country’s government has already begun extensive preparations for the upcoming anniversary.

Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan chaired the first meeting of the National Committee for the Celebration, which includes representatives from various ministries, religious leaders, and public figures. The committee is working in accordance with directives from King Abdullah II, aimed at supporting the initiative of the Council of Jordanian Church Leaders. According to the prime minister, this event is intended to highlight the kingdom’s historical significance as a center of global Christian pilgrimage and a symbol of interfaith coexistence.

As part of preparations for 2030, the authorities plan to implement a number of infrastructure projects. The Development Fund for the Lands Adjacent to the Baptism Site has presented plans to create an integrated village for pilgrims, a modern museum dedicated to the baptism of Christ, as well as the development of a “green corridor” and the modernization of the site’s tourism infrastructure. To ensure a high level of organization for the celebrations, specialized subcommittees will be formed, drawing on leading experts in the field.
