The Transfiguration Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Chernihiv: From a Place of Worship to a Venue for Secular Events

For the third consecutive year, the religious community of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv has been denied the opportunity to hold services in its church on the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Instead of religious celebrations, this ancient shrine is now being used as a venue for concerts and other secular events, which is causing concern among the faithful.

According to uoc-news.church, access to the church for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church congregation was blocked on October 5, 2023, after a commission from the Ministry of Culture sealed off six religious buildings in Chernihiv. The official justification for this decision was the “unsatisfactory condition” of the Transfiguration, Trinity, and Dormition Cathedrals, which, according to the ministry, required comprehensive restoration.

However, after the sites were transferred to the management of the state reserve, priority was given to their use as a museum, which often goes beyond the secular use of architectural monuments. There have been reports of musical performances taking place near the altar, unauthorized individuals being present in the sanctuary, and dancers performing in other significant churches in the city. Critics of the situation point out that not even New Style services are held in the cathedral, which confirms its de facto conversion into a secular institution.

Believers perceive these events as a disregard for the sacred significance of these centuries-old holy sites and a blatant insult to religious sensibilities. At the same time, the public is drawing attention to the contrast between the strict control measures imposed on some churches and the ministry’s inaction regarding other cultural heritage sites, which are rapidly falling into disrepair without proper state oversight.

As a reminder, we previously reported that another secular event took place at the Spassky Cathedral in Chernihiv—a church previously seized from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church—which drew sharp criticism from believers. Instead of a traditional memorial service for the deceased medical workers, the authorities organized a concert in the church, featuring musicians playing guitars directly at the altar.
