In Zhytomyr region, city council demands in court to recognize UOC cathedral as municipal property

The Radomyshl City Council of the Zhytomyr region has initiated a lawsuit to recognize the right of municipal ownership of St. Nicholas Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is a significant cultural heritage site. According to Zhitomir.info, the Economic Court of Zhytomyr region opened proceedings in this case in April 2026.
The claims of the local authorities are based on the fact that the cathedral, located on the Cathedral Square in Radomyshl, is currently officially listed as ownerless property, and the ownership rights to it are not properly registered. According to published information, the absence of a legal owner prevents the city council from concluding a security contract, as well as from fully maintaining and carrying out the necessary repairs to the building, which was built in the late 19th century and consecrated in 1883.
Currently, the court proceedings are intended to finally secure the status of an architectural monument for the local community, which will allow “to ensure its preservation and proper operation within the framework of the current legislation.”
As reported, on November 10, 2023, employees of the Security Service of Ukraine are inspecting St. Nicholas Cathedral of the UOC in Radomyshl, Zhytomyr region. It is known that in September, St. Nicholas Cathedral in Radomyshl was sealed and “transferred for safekeeping” to the religious community of the OCU.
