The damage to the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has been estimated at 15 million euros

The administration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve reported extensive damage to the Cathedral of the Dormition. According to estimates by the reserve’s director, Maksym Ostapenko, approximately 15 million euros will be needed to fully restore the monastery’s main church. Part of the funding for urgent emergency repairs has already been allocated from the state reserve fund, and the Swiss government has provided a grant of 700,000 euros to prepare the design and cost estimate documentation.

Currently , specialists are focusing their efforts on preserving the building before winter sets in, which will help prevent further structural damage. Maxim Ostapenko emphasized that, despite the damage sustained, the cathedral was saved from complete destruction. ““Its restoration will be easier than it was after 1941, but it will take time—I think at least a couple of years—and involve significant costs,” noted the head of the reserve.

As a reminder, according to the administration’s plans, the transition to full-scale restoration work is scheduled for next year, following the completion of the design phase. The Assumption Cathedral has a rich and complex history of restoration: in 1941, the church was almost completely destroyed, and its current appearance was recreated during the years of Ukraine’s independence.
