The first Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will be built in Izmail, Odesa Oblast

At a meeting on September 18, members of the Izmail City Council approved the development of a detailed zoning plan for the construction of the city’s first Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The site in question is located on Nezavisimosti Avenue, bounded by Ilya Repin Street and Mykhailo Hrushevsky Street.

The decision was adopted in response to a request from the religious community in honor of Josafat Kuntsevych. The designated use of the land plot provides for the construction and maintenance of buildings for public and religious organizations. The documentation must define the layout of the territory, including common-use areas: roads, sidewalks, and green spaces. Up to 20 days are allotted to select the project developer and identify funding sources, and within 30 days after approval by the executive committee, a contract for the preparation of technical documentation must be signed.

The project implementation process also includes mandatory public hearings and a strategic environmental assessment procedure. It is important to note that the current decision by the city council concerns exclusively the development of urban planning documentation, not the final transfer of the plot to the community’s ownership or use.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) religious community has been active in Izmail since 2018 under the leadership of Volodymyr Zhuk. At present, the community’s religious services are held at the Roman Catholic church on Pokrovska Street. According to the YouControl database, the religious organization was officially registered as a legal entity on August 20, 2025, and its list of founders included ten local residents.

As a reminder, on September 1, 2025, the Don Bosco Catholic School was officially opened in Zaporizhzhia. This fully-fledged educational institution, which was built in 14 months, will operate under the auspices and spiritual guidance of the Donetsk Exarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
