In Ukraine, more than 400 churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have been damaged as a result of the hostilities

According to a recent report by the “Religion on Fire” project, between February 24, 2022, and September 21, 2026, hundreds of religious sites in Ukraine were severely damaged or completely destroyed as a result of hostilities. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church suffered the most significant damage—432 churches were damaged or destroyed.

In total, according to data from the “Workshop of Academic Religious Studies,” 807 religious buildings of various denominations were recorded as having been damaged. The situation remains critical: about 80 buildings were completely razed to the ground, and more than 135 sites sustained such severe damage that their restoration is deemed impossible. Experts note that many places of worship were shelled repeatedly, leading to their complete destruction.

Statistics on other religious organizations also demonstrate the scale of the destruction: 207 Protestant sites, 83 churches of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, 37 Catholic churches, 24 Jewish places of worship, 13 religious educational institutions, 8 Muslim mosques, and 16 buildings belonging to other denominations. Previously, the issue of preserving religious heritage was raised at the international level; in particular, an exhibition dedicated to destroyed Ukrainian churches was organized in Paris.
