Representatives of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches discussed the draft of the new Civil Code with lawmakers

On October 14, 2026, an important meeting took place between representatives of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (VSCiRO) and Ivan Kalau, the deputy chair of the parliamentary committee on legal policy and head of the working group tasked with drafting Ukraine’s new Civil Code. The meeting took place at the Department of External Relations of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), according to the official website of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations.

During the discussion, the parties paid particular attention to the key proposals made by religious organizations regarding the draft code (No. 15150). The main topics of discussion concerned the legislative regulation of marriage and family issues in accordance with Article 51 of the Constitution of Ukraine, as well as the resolution of problematic aspects faced by religious and other nonprofit organizations during the transition period.

The meeting was attended by delegates from the OCU, the UGCC, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Ukrainian Bible Society, and the Institute for Religious Freedom. The parties agreed to continue active cooperation in preparing the document for the second reading.

It should be noted that earlier, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk reported on the progress of work on the draft of the new Civil Code, emphasizing the need to achieve a broad public consensus. The working group aims to take into account the positions of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (ACCRO) and representatives of the LGBT community when preparing the document for the second reading.
