Major U.S. banks are accused of systematically discriminating against customers on religious and political grounds

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), which operates under the Department of the Treasury, has uncovered evidence of widespread discrimination against Christian organizations and religious citizens by nine of the largest national banks. According to the findings of a large-scale investigation, these financial institutions restricted access to services and closed customer accounts based on their political, religious, and ideological beliefs.
As reported by CBS News, the regulator analyzed more than 100,000 complaints and hundreds of internal bank decisions from 2020 through September 2025. The investigation confirmed that the practice of so-called “debanking” (sudden termination of service) was routinely applied to individual citizens and civic organizations. Christian communities and nonprofit organizations that hold traditional views on morality and marriage came under particular pressure.
To provide a legal justification for their actions and minimize “reputational risks,” banks relied on materials from far-left organizations, particularly the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). This organization classifies many Christian groups as “hate groups” because of their adherence to biblical principles. As a result of this policy, believers faced frozen loan programs, an inability to repay debts, and significant financial losses that threatened their very livelihoods.
A large-scale inspection was conducted in accordance with President Donald Trump’s 2025 executive order, which aims to protect American citizens from ideological discrimination in the banking sector. For their part, representatives of the Bank Policy Institute, an organization that advocates for the interests of banks, stated that financial institutions strive to ensure equal access to services and strictly adhere to established standards without infringing on customers’ rights.
As a reminder, earlier in the U.S., a representative of the “Church of Satan” opened a city council meeting with a prayer to the devil.
