On March 8, 2023, the secretary of the Glubochitsky village council of the Zhytomyr region, Vitaliy Shpakovsky, cut the lock off the doors of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary so that OCU supporters could get inside. The head of the legal department of the Zhytomyr diocese of the UOC, Priest Ioan Demidenko, told the UOJ about this.

The priest noted that “the confrontation was not even with the OCU, but with the local authorities. On March 8, the village council, represented by the secretary, gave us an ultimatum — either give us the keys, or we will cut the locks.

Ierei emphasized that the community was illegally “re-registered” from the UOC to the OCU back in 2019. According to him, the “re-registration” took place quietly and imperceptibly, and the opinion of the parishioners of the temple was not even asked.

At the same time, the head of the legal department of the diocese said that they tried to convince the activists of the OCU to resolve all contentious issues in court, but they refused to even enter into a dialogue.
