Archbishop of Bălți Markell Calls for Defense of the Church Amid Political Persecution in Moldova

Archbishop Markell of Bălți and Fălești has issued a strong call for the protection of the Orthodox Church of Moldova, noting that Moldovan authorities are actively persecuting clergy due to their pilgrimage trips. In his statement, the archbishop emphasized that it is not only trips to Russia that have triggered the persecution, but also political pressure on the Church through fines and reprisals against clergy for their religious activities. He discussed this in an interview on the TVC21 channel.
Markell pointed out that the Moldovan police continue to issue protocols and impose fines on clergy for participating in religious rites, as well as for alleged illegal activities related to elections. The archbishop stressed that such actions by the authorities are aimed at destroying the Church’s independence, isolating it, and subjecting it to political influence.
He also drew attention to the fact that, even if there had been no pilgrimage to Russia, the Moldovan authorities would have found another reason for pressure. This is part of a broader political struggle between the Moldovan Metropolis and the so-called «Bessarabian Metropolis,» which is supported by local authorities. Through the example of blocking the trip of clergy to bring back the Holy Fire, the archbishop demonstrated how political forces are trying to influence religious processes. He expressed gratitude that the faithful were still able to receive the Holy Fire, but noted that the situation could have been worse if the delay in the trip had lasted longer.
The archbishop called on Moldovan society to support the Church and firmly stand in its defense. He emphasized that religious persecution is nothing new for the Moldovan faithful, as the Church has always been with the people, even in the most difficult times, from Soviet-era repression to contemporary challenges. «We cannot allow the destruction of what is the foundation of our spiritual existence,» Archbishop Markell urged.
He also highlighted the vital role of the Church as a moral and spiritual stronghold for the Moldovan people, emphasizing that it is an integral part of their history and identity. The Church has been with the people in the most challenging moments, and now it must be defended from political attacks.
It is important to note that Archbishop Markell of Bălți and Fălești, a hierarch of the Orthodox Church of Moldova, was unable to fly to Jerusalem to participate in the ceremony of receiving the Holy Fire. He was stopped at the airport before boarding a flight to Israel.
