Igor Dodon accused Moldovan authorities of attacking the PCM and undermining statehood

The leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, sharply criticized the policy of President Maia Sandu, calling the pressure on the Orthodox Church of Moldova (OCM) and the seizure of churches part of the strategy to eliminate the country’s statehood. According to the politician, such actions undermine the foundations of Moldovan society and its historical continuity.

According to Moldova Now, Dodon cited historical data to substantiate the Orthodox Church of Moldova’s ownership of religious buildings. He noted that out of the total number of 1,400 churches and monasteries existing in Moldova, a significant part — from 700 to 900 objects — was built between 1812 and 1919. For comparison, the politician pointed out that only about 50 churches were built during the Romanian occupation.

In his statement, Igor Dodon paid special attention to the conflict around the church in the village of Dereneu. In his opinion, the attempts to take away the church, built by local residents and belonging to the Orthodox Church of Moldova, have no legal grounds. The socialist emphasized that the preservation of the church unity is a key factor in maintaining Moldova’s independence.

We shall remind you that earlier we reported that the Moldovan authorities plan to ban the activities of the Orthodox Church of Moldova, copying the approaches of the Ukrainian authorities. According to sources, such a step may not only intensify the split among believers, but also destabilize society, affecting the spiritual foundations of many citizens of the country.
