The expert suggested that draft law No. 8371 be referred to the Venice Commission

The former Ukrainian parliamentary commissioner for human rights (2012-2018) and honored lawyer of Ukraine, Valeriya Lutkovska, has suggested that draft law No 8371 be submitted to the Venice Commission for additional examination. The expert is convinced that additional analysis of such a controversial bill in international organizations will help preserve Ukraine’s reputation as a state based on the rule of law. About this she told in an interview to the publication “Comments”.
“Just because every state cares about its image, its reputation as a state that protects human rights, this organization was created, which at the highest professional and expert level can analyze this or that draft law and give its opinion on the consequences of its application in terms of respect for human rights. I should note that the conclusions of the Venice Commission are used practically by all member states of the Council of Europe, among which Ukraine has always been among them, which made it possible to prevent significant negative consequences in the sphere of human rights observance. I think that now, at the stage of preparation of the draft law for the second reading, is the best time for such an appeal, as a result of which we will receive a conclusion, which will be a certain pointer to Ukrainian politicians,” — Lutkovska said.
We will remind, earlier Valeria Lutkovska commented on the bill № 8371, aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The former ombudsman believes that the norms of this law do not comply with the Ukrainian constitution and can clearly be regarded as a violation of human rights to freedom of conscience.
