In Zaporizhzhia, a proposal was made to rename Borisoglebskaya Street in honor of an OUN activist

In Zaporizhzhia, authorities have opened a public discussion on renaming Borisoglebska Street, located in the city’s Shevchenko District. Local residents are being asked to choose a new name, with one of the options being the name of Yuriy Kuril, a leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN).

The proposal, available at , was initiated by local resident Maria Topchiy. The district administration is currently conducting an online survey, which will run until September 25, 2026.

Yuriy Kurilo—the son of Illarion Kurilo-Krymchak, the leader of the OUN’s Melitopol underground—headed the organization’s youth cell in the village of Voznesenka during World War II. The group’s activities consisted of distributing propaganda materials. In 1945, a Soviet tribunal sentenced him to ten years of hard labor and five years in prison camps. After his release, Kurilo lived in the very neighborhood where Borisoglebska Street is located today.

It should be noted that earlier, the Kyiv City Council adopted a resolution to rename a section of Lavrska Street in the Pechersk district in honor of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. According to the city council, this decision “restores the historical name, which was changed in 2010 amid political pressure.”
