On August 24, 2024, the Independence Day of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky signed the law No. 8371, adopted in the second reading in the Ukrainian Parliament, aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In addition, the head of state “marked” another attack in the direction of the UOC, publicly calling the clergy and believers of the Church “Moscow devils”. “Congratulations” Zelensky with Independence Day is posted on the website of the President of Ukraine.

It is reported that on August 24, 2024 Volodymyr Zelensky signed the bill № 8371 “On protection of the constitutional order in the sphere of activities of religious organizations” adopted as a whole by the Verkhovna Rada, aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Later, the head of state’s website published a video message by Zelensky, timed to coincide with the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence. In it, Zelensky, in an insulting way, spoke out against the clergy and believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

“Independence has many dimensions, each of which must be acquired to defend independence comprehensive. It is economic, it is energy independence, it is spiritual independence of the Ukrainian people. And Ukrainian Orthodoxy today is making a step towards liberation from Moscow devils,” — Zelensky said.

We will remind, earlier Metropolitan Kliment (Vecherya) commented on the legislative ban of the UOC. The bishop explained that it is impossible to ban the Church as any other legal organization, and such a decision of the Parliament will create more problems for the government, then for the UOC.
