"Either in the OCU or without churches": Ukrainian religious scholar explains how the law banning the UOC will work

OCU lobbyist in the media and freelance expert of the State Service for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience, religious scholar Andrey Smirnov, spoke about how the scandalous law No. 3894, aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, will work. Smirnov argues that soon the UOC communities will face a choice – to transfer to the OCU or to lose their churches. He said this in an interview with the publication “Texty”.

“In two months, the contracts for the use of religious buildings that were leased to the UOC-MP by local councils will be terminated, and the communities will face a choice: either they will lose the opportunity to use these monuments, or they will transfer to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. I do not rule out that some parishes will indeed decide to move to the OCU, keep the church and continue to pray there,” – Smirnov said.

We will remind, earlier the head of the Committee on humanitarian and information policy Nikita Poturaev said that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will not go underground after its final ban. The MP is convinced that only a few people in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church are ready for such a step, while the majority need familiar conditions.
