A new Primate of the Albanian Orthodox Church has been elected

On March 16, 2025, the election of a new Primate of the Albanian Orthodox Church took place in Tirana. According to the results of the election process, Metropolitan John of Korçën, who previously served as locum tenens of the Primate’s Throne, was elected as the new His Beatitude Archbishop of Tirana and All Albania. This was reported by the official website of the Albanian Orthodox Church.
“Today, on Sunday of the 2nd week of Great Lent, March 16, 2025, after the Divine Liturgy, according to the Holy Tradition and the Statute of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania, the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania gathered at the Synodal Center in Tirana to elect a new Archbishop. After prayer, the members of the Holy Synod, chaired by His Eminence Metropolitan John of Korçën, the custodian of the archbishop’s throne, unanimously elected a successor to the current Archbishop Anastasios. His Eminence, Metropolitan John of Korçën, was elevated to the rank of Archbishop of Tirana, Durrë and All Albania and Primate of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania,” — the press service of the Albanian Orthodox Church said.
Earlier, we reported that the hierarch of the Albanian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan John of Korçën, is the most likely candidate for the post of the new Primate of the Albanian Orthodox Church. The bishop is considered the spiritual successor of the late Archbishop Anastasios and has all the necessary qualities to fulfill the high priestly duties.
