Cherkasy City Council deprives Cherkasy Diocese of the UOC of ownership of three land plots in the city

On April 9, 2025, the Cherkasy City Council held an extraordinary session at which it decided to deprive the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the right to own three land plots located within the city. The city council stated that they “did what they had to do.” This was reported by the press service of the Cherkasy City Council.

It is reported that these are the following land plots:

– An area of 0.5993 hectares at 30 Heroiv Dnipra Street;
– An area of 0.2892 hectares at 39/1 Sumhaitska Street;
– An area of 0.6400 hectares at 18 Vikenty Khvoyky Street.

“We did what Cherkasy City Council was supposed to do. Since the Cherkasy City Council had previously decided to transfer this land plot to the permanent use of the UOC-MP, this decision has now been canceled. By this step, we have eliminated the existing legal restrictions, which will allow other religious communities to use this land,” – said Yuriy Trenkin, Secretary of the Cherkasy City Council.

As reported, the day before, the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church reported that supporters of the OCU, with the support of local authorities, plan to seize two more churches of the UOC in Cherkasy in the near future. These are churches in honor of the Nativity of Christ and the Apostle Andrew the First-Called, which are not architectural monuments and are not owned by the city authorities.
