A theological conference dedicated to Ukrainian church issues was held in Greece

On June 1, 2025, a theological conference dedicated to the Ukrainian church issue was held in Greece. The event was organized in Piraeus by the Methexis Union of Theologians with the support of the head of the local diocese of the Greek Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus. Conference participants delivered reports on the consequences of the granting of the Tomos of Autocephaly to the OCU by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. This was reported by the Union of Orthodox Journalists.

It is reported that leading Greek theologians and canonists took part in the conference. Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus delivered his own report on Ukrainian church issues, presenting a report entitled “An Ecclesiological and Canonical View of Ukrainian Autocephaly.”

The program of the event included two sessions with presentations and discussions, which allowed participants to comprehensively discuss various aspects of the Ukrainian church crisis, from canonical issues to international consequences.

During the conference, one of the participants, Protopresbyter Ioannis Diotis, called on the Local Churches to initiate an appeal to the Patriarch of Constantinople regarding the invalidity of the recognition of the OCU.

Earlier, the well-known Greek theologian, sectologist, and monk of the monastery of St. Arsenius of Cappadocia in Chalkidiki, Hieromonk Arsenius Vlyagkofitis, expressed deep concern about the church situation in Ukraine. According to Father Arsenius, the OCU is a non-canonical structure, and its members are schismatics. He called the rapprochement between the OCU and the Uniates and their joint services particularly alarming.
