The DESS reported on the number of parishes of the UOC and the OCU in the country

The State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience reported on the number of religious organizations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the OCU in the country. According to DESS, the state managed to re-register 2,022 religious communities of the UOC in favor of the OCU. At the same time, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church still has a numerical advantage in the country. This was reported by LIGA.net.

According to data provided by the DESS by region, as of January 1, 2025, the OCU has 8,511 organizations throughout Ukraine, with the largest number in the Ternopil (630), Khmelnytsky (704), and Lviv (1,013) regions.

The UOC has 10,118 organizations. The largest number is in Vinnytsia (836), Dnipropetrovsk (649), and Khmelnytskyi (621) regions. At the same time, only five organizations are registered in Lviv region.

The Patriarchate of Constantinople has a minimal presence – only one organization in Kyiv.

The data also indicate the following regional differences:

  • Western regions (Lviv 3,299, Ternopil 1,876, Ivano-Frankivsk 1,453) have the largest number of religious organizations;
  • Eastern regions, such as Donetsk (546) and Luhansk (869), have fewer organizations;
  • There are 1,327 religious organizations in Kyiv, including Protestant and Jewish communities.

According to the report, a total of 34,663 religious organizations are registered in Ukraine, including 382 religious administrations and centers, 33,086 religious communities, and 15,506 clergy members. In addition, there are 554 monasteries, 244 missions, 300 religious brotherhoods, and 361 religious educational institutions in the country. There are also 127 religious schools and 46 other religious organizations registered.

Earlier, we reported that interest in religion among young people aged 18 to 24 has sharply declined in Ukraine. As of 2024, only 52% of Ukrainians in this age group are interested in religion, which is almost a third less than older people.
