“22 people killed”: Islamists carry out terrorist attack on Antioch Patriarchate church in Damascus
On June 22, 2025, during Sunday service at the church dedicated to the holy prophet Elijah in Damascus (Syria), a member of the radical Islamist organization Islamic State carried out a bloody terrorist attack, killing 22 people. The terrorist broke into the temple, opened fire on people, and after the shooting blew himself up with an explosive device attached to his body. This was reported by the media.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, reported yesterday evening by the official news agency SANA, 22 people were killed and 63 wounded in the attack. Eyewitness Lawrence Maamari said that «someone entered the church with a weapon and started shooting indiscriminately. When worshippers tried to stop him, he detonated the explosives he was carrying.»
The United Nations and many countries, including the United States, France, and Greece, condemned the attack, the first of its kind in the Syrian capital since radical Islamist forces overthrew former President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024.
