Grave of Tzadik Nachman in Uman Granted National Heritage Status

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has granted the grave of Tzadik Nachman in Uman the status of a national heritage site. This was announced by Taras Melnychuk, the government’s representative in the Verkhovna Rada. According to him, the site’s designation was changed from local to national significance “in the category of history.” The information was reported by the source Kommersant Ukrainian.
It is known that in December 2024, the Ministry of Culture recorded illegal construction of a five-story hotel near the grave. The ministry reminded that the site is listed in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine and is under state protection. Any construction work in the surrounding area must comply with the Law of Ukraine “On the Protection of Cultural Heritage.”
On October 30, 2024, the Ministry officially denied approval of the project documentation for the hotel, citing non-compliance with cultural heritage preservation requirements. The land plots intended for construction are located within the protective zones of the State Historical and Architectural Reserve «Old Uman», the historical center of Breslov Hasidic pilgrimage, and the city’s central historic district.
Granting the grave of Tzadik Nachman national heritage status will strengthen control over the preservation of the site and help prevent unauthorized construction around it.
Earlier, it was reported that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree awarding Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine Moshe Reuven Asman the Order of Merit, 2nd class. The award was timed to Constitution Day of Ukraine and presented “for contributions to strengthening Ukrainian statehood, protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” as well as for active public service.
