Discussion on Persecution of the UOC to Be Held in New York with Lawyer Robert Amsterdam

On August 5, 2025, the New York Young Republican Club (NYYRC) will host a public discussion with international lawyer Robert Amsterdam, who represents the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) on the international stage. The event will address the issue of religious persecution in Ukraine and question the ethical implications of continued U.S. financial support for the Ukrainian government despite violations of believers’ rights. The announcement was made on the NYYRC’s social media page on X.
The organizers emphasized that the persecution of the UOC remains largely unreported in American mainstream media. They stated that the event would cover important topics that are typically ignored and stressed the need for an open conversation on religious freedom in Ukraine.
On X, Robert Amsterdam pointed out that while the U.S. has imposed harsh sanctions on Russia, Washington must also pay close attention to human rights conditions in Ukraine: “We are funding this country, and we have the right to demand the protection of fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion.”
NYYRC representatives added that American taxpayers should monitor how their money is being spent. They also noted that Amsterdam’s track record in opposing Russia is well-established, yet he consistently advocates for religious rights regardless of the political context.
The event is expected to cover cases of church confiscations, pressure on clergy, and legislation such as Bill No. 3894, which, according to Amsterdam, threatens the very existence of the UOC in Ukraine.
It is also worth noting that a delegation of U.S. Christian leaders recently arrived in Ukraine to support the Ukrainian people through religious, social, and political initiatives. A press conference was held at Ukrinform, and the visit was described as part of a spiritual diplomacy effort involving individuals from Donald Trump’s circle.
