Sviatoslav Shevchuk: The UGCC originated 1,000 years ago, not in 1596

The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, called the information that the structure he heads was formed as a result of the Brest Religious Union in 1596 “Moscow propaganda.” According to Shevchuk, the history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church spans more than a thousand years and dates back to the baptism of Kievan Rus. He made this statement during a meeting with young people at the Cathedral in Kyiv.

“For centuries, Moscow propaganda has been telling us that we never existed in Kyiv. We were told that we were born, we emerged, do you hear? We emerged only in 1596, when the Uniate Church was formed by the Act of the Union of Brest. But this is not true. We were born 1,000 years ago here in Kyiv, in the waters of the Dnieper River, in the sacrament of the baptism of St. Vladimir. We, as a Church, as God’s people, have Kyiv roots,” said the head of the UGCC.

As previously reported, construction of a new Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will begin soon in the Obolon district of Kyiv. The building, which is planned to be constructed in a futuristic style, will have a “public space” and a “shelter.”
