The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church spoke out against making peace with Russia through territorial concessions

Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), took a firm stance on the prospects for ending the conflict, stating that Ukraine cannot agree to a peace that would entail the loss of sovereign territories. He made these remarks in an interview with the publication “Kyiv Diplomatic.”
According to Shevchuk, any territorial concessions are unacceptable compromises, even if they are offered as a condition for ending hostilities. “‘We are not territories; we are living people,’” emphasized the head of the UGCC, noting that calls to freeze the conflict along the current front lines threaten the foundations of international law. The head of the Uniates is convinced that recognizing changes to state borders achieved by force would establish the “law of the strong” in the world, thereby devaluing any future peace agreements.
As a reminder, the head of the UGCC previously stated that it is necessary to explain to Western partners the legality of the ban on the UOC.
