“Taken into account”: the European Union commented on the Ukrainian authorities' decision to ban the UOC

Peter Stano, the official spokesperson for the EU’s foreign policy service, said that the European Union is generally aware of the Ukrainian government’s actions aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Without expressing his own opinion on the matter, Stano merely noted that “Ukraine generally ensures freedom of religion.” He made this statement in a comment to DW.

«We are aware that Ukraine is taking legal action against the Moscow-affiliated UOC due to the Moscow Patriarchate’s full support for Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. We have taken note that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed a law banning the activities of religious organizations affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church on the territory of Ukraine for reasons of national security and to prevent foreign interference by Russia. Overall, Ukrainian state authorities ensure that these rights are respected,» — Stano replied.

Earlier, US Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of the Republican Party announced that the United States would not finance Ukraine or supply the country with weapons because Volodymyr Zelensky had banned the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Luna stated that America would no longer be a “piggy bank” for Ukraine.
