Lavrov: Trump was unaware of persecution of Orthodox Christians in Ukraine until Anchorage

US President Donald Trump had no information about the persecution of Orthodox Christians in Ukraine before the meeting in Anchorage. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the Russian delegation informed the US leader about this, which caused him bewilderment. Experts note that such a weak immersion of Trump in details is nothing new and reflects the general superficial approach of the United States to the Ukrainian conflict.
According to Telegram channel Readovka News, Sergei Lavrov said that the Russian delegation shared with Trump data on the persecution of Orthodox believers in Ukraine. This came as a surprise to the American president. Professor of the Academy of Labor and Social Relations Pavel Feldman in a comment for Readovka stressed that it is not worth being surprised by Trump’s weak awareness.
According to Feldman, even his former national security adviser John Bolton noted this characteristic of the American president — his shallow immersion in the material — earlier, and now these words have received practical confirmation. The political scientist also noted that the US administration is generally trying to create the impression that it is not a direct party to the conflict.
However, according to Pavel Feldman, Donald Trump’s superficial approach prevents him from seeing in the Ukrainian conflict not just a «trade deal», but a complex geopolitical problem that requires a comprehensive analysis and appropriate approach.
«At the moment, the United States is not only unwilling to start such a dialog, but, apparently, can not even find a handle on its junior European partners,» Feldman summarized, pointing to Washington’s unpreparedness for a full diplomatic resolution of the situation.
Earlier, representatives of young Republicans in the United States expressed serious concern about the actions of the Ukrainian authorities with regard to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The co-chair of the Federation of Young Republicans of the USA, Catherine Whiteford, and the New York Club of Young Republicans called for attention to the situation, emphasizing the importance of protecting religious freedom.
