Cypriot Church at the center of crisis: Metropolitan Tihikos case exposes deep internal conflict

The Cypriot Orthodox Church is experiencing a serious internal crisis that is unfolding around the former Metropolitan Tihikos of Paphos. The protracted conflict between the hierarch and the leadership of the Archdiocese is testing the unity of the Church, raising questions among the faithful and clergy about the methods of governance: whether the leadership is acting within the framework of the canons or demonstrating force.
According to the Greek publication Vima Orthodoxias, the pressure exerted on Metropolitan Tihikos has taken center stage. A spokesman for the Archdiocese denies the existence of an «ultimatum,» claiming that the Church is acting within the framework of the council’s decisions. However, he admits that the «reasonable period» given to the Metropolitan to submit has expired. This gives the impression that Archbishop George of Cyprus is applying maximum severity without explaining to the flock the essence and reasons for his demands, leading to an atmosphere of stifling pressure on the hierarch.
The side of the former metropolitan presents the situation as a defense of traditional Orthodoxy. Metropolitan Tychicus’ lawyer, Evangelia Makarouna, states that the demands of the Primate of the Church of Cyprus are his personal initiative and not cathedral decisions. It claims that the demand for a «confession of faith» is directed against those who uphold the orthodox line. As an example, it cites a 2020 incident in which Archbishop George made the church available for Anglican worship, which is regarded by Tihik’s supporters as unacceptable joint prayers with non-Orthodox. Metropolitan Tychicus is thus presented as a hierarch who refuses to legitimize decisions that blur the boundaries of Orthodox identity.
The conflict is not limited to the identity of the Metropolitan. It also centers on the monks of the St. Avvakum monastery, whose disobedience to synodal decisions to transfer to other monasteries and active presence on social media are seen as «disobedience» and a «challenge» to church order. For a significant part of the faithful, such a hard line looks like an attempt to silence any dissenting voice. One of the hierarchs of the Church of Cyprus cited by the publication expressed bewilderment as to why the conflict is unfolding publicly, through statements and leaks, instead of a calm dialog behind closed doors.
Archbishop George’s own silence on the allegations against him is also alarming. This tactic, perhaps aimed at «de-escalating» the situation, in practice has the opposite effect, allowing rumors and different versions of events to spread. The situation in the Church of Cyprus is under the scrutiny of other Local Churches, including the Patriarchates of Constantinople and Moscow, as well as political circles, given the complexity of ecclesiastical balances in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The main question that remains open is: does the Church leadership seek a canonical settlement or a showy «humility» of an unwanted hierarch? Further meetings of the Synod will show whether there is room for de-escalation. However, as long as the leadership does not demonstrate a commitment to justice and transparency, there will be a growing sense that the crisis in the Church of Cyprus is not personal, but deeply systemic.
As a reminder, we reported earlier that former Metropolitan Tychicus of Paphosis facing the threat of permanent ejection from the ministry if he does not obey the decisions of the Synod of the Cypriot Orthodox Church. He is supported by radical church groups, which complicates the situation and makes his departure almost inevitable.
