Zelensky held a meeting with the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus

During his official visit to Cyprus, Volodymyr Zelensky met with the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Archbishop George, and invited him to visit Ukraine. The meeting took place on January 7, 2026 in Nicosia, and Archbishop George expressed his willingness to consider the possibility of such a trip in the future. This is reported by the website of the President of Ukraine.

The talks were held in the Archdiocese after Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Presidential Palace of Cyprus and held a meeting with the President of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulidis. During the conversation with the Archbishop, topical issues concerning the situation in Ukraine, as well as the situation of the Orthodox peoples in the ongoing conflicts were touched upon.

Welcoming the Ukrainian leader, Archbishop George emphasized the faith of the Orthodox in the triumph of justice and God’s help, noting that the trials through which the peoples are passing require patience and trust in God.

Vladimir Zelensky thanked the Primate of the Church of Cyprus for his reception and support. He expressed hope to see Archbishop George on a return visit to Kyiv. Answering journalists’ questions after the meeting, the Primate of the Church of Cyprus confirmed his willingness to consider a trip to Ukraine in the future.

In addition, Archbishop George drew parallels between the situation in Ukraine and the situation in Cyprus, in particular pointing to the problem of the occupied territories. He said that the issue of Turkish occupation of Cyprus was brought to the attention of the Ukrainian President and, according to him, was not left without attention.
