Hungary's new government is ready to support EU sanctions against Patriarch Kirill

The new Hungarian government headed by Péter Magyar has expressed readiness to support the introduction of sanctions against Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. This step will be a manifestation of a significant change in the position of Budapest, which previously consistently blocked such initiatives at the level of the European Union.
According to Euronews, citing European officials, EU ambassadors are currently discussing a so-called «mini-package» of sanctions. The restrictions may affect about a dozen people, including the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, who was previously actively defended by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
According to Magyar’s associates, Hungary will continue to veto those decisions that «undermine the economic stability of the country,» but the new leadership has no plans to prevent sanctions against specific individuals that contribute to increased pressure on Russia.
We shall remind you that on November 22, 2024 Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree, according to which he enacted the decision of the National Security and Defence Council on deprivation of state awards «traitors to Ukraine», first of all, 34 people will be deprived of their honors. The «traitors of Ukraine» also included the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
