Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Lithuania

On Monday, June 8, 2026, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė held an official meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, who was visiting the country. The parties discussed issues related to the functioning of the Phanar Exarchate in Lithuania, the protection of religious freedom, and joint support for Ukraine.

According to the publication Fos Fanariou, the head of government expressed her gratitude to the Patriarch for his attention to the Lithuanian Orthodox community. According to Inga Ruginienė, the Exarchate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, reestablished several years ago, has provided believers with a “necessary alternative,” allowing them to “practice their faith without conflict of conscience.”

During the conversation, the Prime Minister emphasized that “freedom of religion and respect for diversity are fundamental values enshrined in the Constitution of Lithuania.” The parties also discussed the practical aspects of the Exarchate’s work and the current needs of Orthodox communities in the region.

Special attention was given to the recent appointment of the new Exarch of the Patriarch of Constantinople in Lithuania. Inga Ruginienė welcomed the election of Bishop Panaret of Tamis, calling it an important step toward strengthening the spiritual life of the faithful. At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of religious freedom and to continued cooperation between the Lithuanian government and the Church of Constantinople.
