In Thessaloniki, unknown individuals tore down an LGBT flag from the Aristotle University building

An incident occurred at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki: unknown individuals tore down a rainbow flag that had been displayed by the university administration to mark “Pride Month.” The university administration and the relevant committee stated that the incident will not affect the university’s continued commitment to inclusivity and the fight against discrimination.

According to a Facebook post by the university’s Gender Equality Committee, the flag had been displayed on one of the buildings at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. The university’s Gender Equality Committee reported the incident on its Facebook page.

Committee representatives described the incident as “homotransphobic vandalism.” The statement emphasizes that, in the administration’s view, the destruction of the symbol does not negate the university’s stated values of dignity, equality, and respect.

It is noted that a previous post about the flag’s display had sparked a strong reaction on social media, including critical and harsh comments. Professor Dimitra Kongidou stated that this reaction revealed significant resistance to such initiatives among certain segments of society.

The administration of Aristotle University believes that the incident confirms the need to continue working to promote inclusive policies and combat discrimination.

It should be noted that earlier, the Cypriot “theologian” Theodoros Kyriakou had proposed an open discussion on the topic of homosexuality within the Church, calling for the recognition of LGBT members among the clergy and for pastoral practices to be adapted to modern scientific findings. In his view, the Church must show courage and reconsider its positions, which he described as overly conservative.
