The Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church expressed his support for Metropolitan Onufry following the attack on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

The Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (EPCC), Metropolitan Evgeny of Tallinn, sent a letter of support to the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Onufry, following the damage to the Cathedral of the Dormition at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as a result of the shelling of Kyiv. According to the EOC’s press service, the hierarch expressed his condolences and offered his prayers for the clergy, monastics, and the faithful, and also called war an evil incompatible with the Gospel of peace.
In a message dated June 15, 2026, the head of the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church emphasized that the destruction of the ancient cathedral is a tragedy not only for Ukrainian believers but also for all who value spiritual heritage. He noted that the beauty of churches lies not only in stone, but above all in the unceasing prayer that takes place within their walls.
Separately, Metropolitan Evgeny offered a theological assessment of the situation, calling military actions an act of violence that destroys human lives, homes, and places of worship. In his words, such actions are contrary to the will of God, Who is Love, and are absolutely incompatible with the Gospel of peace.
In conclusion, the Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church assured Metropolitan Onufriy that the Church in Estonia continues to pray for an end to the war and for the healing of those affected. He also invoked the protection of the Holy Mother of God upon the flock of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and wished comfort to all who are experiencing grief and anxiety.
